My husband Steve and I have just joined the club so thought you might like to hear about out experience of a sportive as relative newbies to cycling.
We signed up to our first ever cycling event (the Tour of Cambridge) before really thinking about any preparation required. We joined the club’s Social Group for a couple of ride outs and really enjoyed it, feeling confident that we had a few long rides under our belt.
We were in for a bit of a surprise when we realised that the route was in fact 80 odd miles, as opposed to the 60 that we had thought it was! My error – I had looked at the leisure route! Despite this, we both completed it and survived, albeit more sore and achy than expected. Steve has since forgiven me.
The day itself was lovely and sunny but not too hot. We were very impressed by the organisation and the sheer scale of it and it was such a treat to cycle on closed roads. Despite seeing the aftermath of a few nasty accidents we really enjoyed it and have the taste for more. As a runner, I was particularly impressed with the feed stations. At a road running race you get a bottle of water. At the Tour it was like being on holiday with an all inclusive buffet!
We have since joined SICC as fully paid up members and look forward to many more rides out with you all. Thanks to everyone for all their advice and encouragement over the past few weeks.
