Club Time Trial – 20 June

A great turn out, especially considering it seemed quite windy with 24 riders. Adrian Beer was fastest in 22.16. Former club member and a regular in previous years Andrew Knowles was second, setting a PB in 23.21. Third was BRJ’s Cy Gearing in 23.54. Jess Williams was the fastest women in 25.22 and also set another PB, but is being coached by father Graham, a former national 24 hour team time trial champion. Jess is the second fastest women on this course behind Wendy Gooding. Ralf and Holly were the fastest junior riders.

Regulars Tim Phillips and Bob Cooper have both recently had incidents that could see them off the bike for a long period. We all wish them both a speedy recovery and hope to see them riding again soon. Although no one wants to win through competitors being out of action, it does give the rest of us a fighting chance of winning an end of year trophy though after he cleared up last year and seemed on course to do the same again!

Well done to club run regulars Steve Bird and Leo Falkner for riding their first TT’s, both setting very respectable times for their first go and it was good to see Rob riding again.

Next Wednesday, 27th June, will be road bike week at the TT. Whilst not compulsory I would encourage as many members as possible to ride a standard road bike with no aero equipment instead of TT bikes if they use them. These are friendly events with riders from 12 to 73 regularly racing and everyone is welcome. I understand some people may feel out of place not using a TT bike, but many don’t and the time difference isn’t as much as you might think. Hopefully this will encourage more members to come and try the TT’s. Any bikes welcome but points to be awarded only for those on road bikes. That means no clip on TT bars, no one piece skin suits (please wear separate shorts and jerseys, preferably St Ives kit) and no TT helmets either (no Bambino, Aerohead etc but aero road helmets are fine).

The club runs a couple of chain gang sessions each week, one on a Saturday morning, the other Tuesday evening. For those looking to get quicker I would recommend Tuesday evening sessions which Adrian helps organise. Its five laps of 5 miles along the old A428 from Cambourne to Caldecote. The great thing about the Tuesday chain gang course is if your dropped, you can ease up, wait for them to come back in the opposite direction and re-join rather than having wait a long time for them to complete another lap, so get an hours good work out. They meet at 6.30pm at the junction between St Neots Road and Knapwell High St, just south of Knapwell. Further details can be found on Strava or just email me.
